The Rotary Club of Claremont recently sponsored Josie Rey from Herschel Girls to attend the RYLA camp.

What is RYLA? – It is an intensive training programme for youth leaders, which strives to develop
leadership skills and increase self confidence, whilst exposing students to a variety of issues and people and offering them career information and skills. Grades 10-12 students who display leadership qualities are eligible.

Here is Josie’s account below:

I am so grateful to Rotary Claremont for sponsoring me to attend RYLA and would like to thank you profusely for enabling me to have such an enriching and life-changing experience.

I returned on Sunday after four incredible days of team building and leadership development with not only valuable skills, but also amazing memories and new friendships. At first, I was a bit nervous as I was the only Herschel girl in the program but was soon put at ease by the wonderful Interactors, my brilliant yellow team leader, Amy, and the rest of the friendly facilitators. Soon after arriving, I immediately felt at home amongst my fellow campers and we were soon striking up the most interesting conversations all while completing our first task: Developing a new service initiative that we could implement in our Interact clubs and the wider community.

All of the activities stretched our teams mentally and physically whilst ensuring that we bonded and learnt to trust one another. A few were particularly frustrating, but through dedication and resilience our team eventually conquered them! I found the Obstacle Course particularly difficult but felt so proud when we finished as a team. I also really enjoyed the many team building activities, such as the Amazing Race which was held on our first night.

I thought that RYLA was a challenging, but exceedingly rewarding camp. I built so many relationships and really learnt the value of allowing oneself to be vulnerable. I also learnt that through harnessing the power of a team’s combined talents, our full potential can be reached together. At the end, I emerged with so much trust in and love for my fellow campers and will definitely implement the many skills I learnt on the camp throughout my life. I would definitely recommend this camp to everyone and cannot wait to return in March next year as a team leader!

I cannot thank you enough for the experience.
